.preface.

Suddenly, everything went Matrix-like.  I stared at the side of Levi’s face and the shotgun barrel sticking out of the car window behind it.  He never knew it was coming until the bullets were tearing through the side of his chest like anvils through tissue paper.  I could feel each individual drop of my brother’s hot crimson blood hit my face as the metal slugs ripped out of his other side.  And that’s when the Matrix-effect slammed its breaks, throwing me through the windshield into reality.  Levi’s head fell against the wheel, the car swerved, the shotgun withdrew into the window of the van and sped off, and all I could do was watch the growing bloodstain under Levi’s arm.  A horn honked loud and hard, headlights blinded me, and that’s when I first noticed the rapidly approaching store front heading toward us.

That’s when I tumbled deep into the darkness…
